Vernon N. Cantrell was born Oct. 11, 1928, in St. Louis, Mo., to D.W. “Pete” and Faye Weber Cantrell. The family moved to Licking, Mo., when he was a toddler. Vernon graduated from Licking High School in 1946. He was an outstanding basketball player. He served from Aug. 3, 1946, until Dec. 3, 1947, in the United States Army, stationed in Japan. He married Elizabeth Muriel “Betty” Bridges on Nov. 25, 1950. They had one daughter, LaVerne Rose.
